The planning for the Arnold Arboretum Centennial celebration began in 1967 when Dr. Richard A. Howard, Arboretum Director from 1954-1978, appointed committees of supporters and visiting-committee members to raise funds for the upcoming event. Stephen Alan Spongberg was born October 15, 1942 in Rockford, Illinois. He received a Ph. D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in 1971. Dr. Spongberg began working at the Arnold Arboretum in 1970 in the position of assistant curator, working on the Generic Flora of the Southeastern United States project as a postdoctoral graduate.
